In 2009 after an outreach trip with Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and Southern Nazarene University, it was seen that opportunity existed in Swaziland for the Morningstar Institute. Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and the Swaziland HIV/AIDS Task Force are working with those affected by AIDS to help them develop community gardens to provide food for themselves and possibly grow a surplus which could be sold so a family could send their children to school. The University of Swaziland's SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) team had already been working with the community gardens by developing a business plan for them and also using this business model and plan as one of their competition projects that caused them to win the Swaziland national SIFE competition. A partnership has now been forged between Morningstar and the University of Swaziland and the university's SIFE team. Morningstar is sending interns to Swaziland to work alongside the community gardens and the SIFE team in further developing the business model and plans and looking for ways to make the gardens more efficient and profitable. Morningstar initially sent Shane Sellstrom to research setting up a base for the Morningstar interns and preparing a report to cover issues such as housing, meals/social, transportation, education, and communication. After Shane the first interns Morningstar sent to Swaziland were Nathan and Sarah Lockhart, who worked in Swaziland from January to April of 2011.
